“Eight opens to acclaim from food journalists
Spier’s new farm-to-table eating experience, Eight, has opened to acclaim from food journalists. First to review the restaurant was well-respected Myrna Robins of the Weekend Argus.
Myrna spoke of the sustainability focus at the restaurant, from the biodynamic eggs sourced from the farm to the vetting of suppliers, to ensure best practice as regards the environment and workers. Referring to the menu as “short and seasonal, nutritious and wholesome”, Myrna drew reference to “fruity puds” and fresh fruit and vegetable juices, pointing out that carbonated drinks are not to be found here – nor any seafood that can’t be found on the SASSI green list.
Next to visit was Jean-Pierre Rossouw, of Rossouw’s Restaurants. Speaking of Spier as “one of the Cape’s leading wine farms”; Jean-Pierre noted the quality of the wines, the attractiveness of Eight and the “charming service” that he received. He commended the concept of working towards “complete ‘locavore’ with integrity” and concluded by saying that all in all, Eight is “well worth a visit”. Popular online eco-community, Urban Sprout, also shared their “addiction” to Eight, lauding the restaurant as child-friendly, affordable and committed to the environment.
“Most of all, the restaurant lacks pretentiousness, and easily ranks as one of the best places to get a decent, healthy breakfast over a weekend… most of your food is grown moments away on a biodynamic farm…I don’t know about you, but I’m all for this type of eating.” (Full text: http://www.urbansprout.co.za/eight_at_spier_fab_food_and_big_on_the_environment)
