Spier brings home two trophies and five golds from IWSC
Spier has hit the jackpot again at the 2011 International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC), achieving five Best in Class Gold medals and receiving two trophies. Spier’s Savanha Naledi Pinotage 2009, a recent ABSA Top 10 achiever, was awarded the prestigious Abraham Perold Trophy for Pinotage and the Spier Private Collection Chardonnay 2009 was awarded the Mission Hill Trophy for Chardonnay.
This follows hot on the heels of outstanding performances at other recent competitions, where Spier was named 2011 Producer of the Year: Overseas at the prestigious Mundus Vini awards, as well as Most Successful Producer at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.
Among the top performers at these competitions is Spier Creative Block – the estate’s range of blends that was launched last year. In the past year, the range (consisting of three wines) has won nine Gold medals, two Double Golds and four Trophies. Notably, Spier Creative Block 5 2009 was awarded Gold at IWSC, as well as Golds at Mundus Vini and Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, while the Spier Creative Block 3 2009 has also received three Golds, as well as the South African Red & Stellenbosch Trophies at the International Wine Challenge.
The creative force behind these wines is Spier Cellar Master, Frans Smit. “We are particularly interested to note how well our blends are doing at the awards,” he says. “Today, people are often more interested in drinking blends because of their accessibility and consistency. These accolades indicate that blended wines can comfortably share the limelight with the noble varietals from a quality point of view.”
Spier Creative Block takes its name from an art project where artists are invited to produce work on a small block. These blocks are selected by collectors and hung together, creating an artwork greater than the sum of its parts. Smit saw the synergy between this and the process of blending wine, so he named the range after the project, giving further support to the artists.
