Picnickery
The Picnickery has always been one of Spier’s most loved stops. Reimagined by celebrated designer, chef and restaurateur Jacques Erasmus and brought to life by chef Hennie Nel and the Spier kitchen team, it is now part working farm kitchen, part artisan grocer.
Pre-book a curated picnic basket or build your own from the deli counter, choosing from farm cheeses, charcuterie, house-made dips, slow-fermented breads and something sweet. The grocer’s shelves are stocked with nourishing, nutrient-dense, farm-grown produce and small-batch pantry provisions. As we like to say, this is good food grown in good soil. Watch roosterbrood blister on an open fire, or sample open-faced bites topped with cured meats, smoked fish or roasted vegetables, paired with a favourite Spier wine. In summer, the stoep opens wide to the werf; in winter, we know the fire will draw you in. Something is always on the go. Come and find us.

Request your basket at least 24 hours in advance for an effortless outing. Each basket includes seasonal treats from our garden and local producers, plus blankets, cutlery, and glasses. Choose from classic, vegetarian, vegan, or children’s baskets.

Spier Picnic Spots
Choose your spot and make it your own. Laze under the ancient oaks of the historic Werf, or unwind by the Riverside picnic area, where grassy banks, boulders and birdsong create the perfect backdrop. Whether you’ve pre-booked a basket or built your own from the deli, every picnic is effortless and indulgent.
- Request a winter picnic basket at least 24 hours in advance by contacting werf@spier.co.za.
- Blankets, cutlery, and glassware are included in your basket.
- Picnics can be collected from 12:00 – 14:00 at the Picnickery and should be returned by 16:30.
- Picnic spaces are public, but we can accommodate group bookings or special events with set-ups if arranged in advance. Requests for groups larger than 8 or for special set-ups can be sent to werf@spier.co.za.
- No outside food or drink is allowed.
- Personal camping chairs are not permitted, to keep our lawns beautiful and maintain a relaxed atmosphere for all guests.
- Menus are seasonal and subject to change.
- We have gone to great lengths to source local, natural and organic produce for our picnics and therefore do not allow private picnics.
- No own food and drinks are permitted on the farm. Thank you for your support.
