In our hurried world, there’s something comforting about a wine that refuses to be rushed.

That’s why,  as Old Vine Day approaches on August 1st, we’re toasting to one of our favourite days on the wine calendar. As a proudly Old Vine certified wine, our 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2023 has just been awarded the Grand Master honour at the 2025 Global Chenin Masters – the highest possible accolade and top wine of the entire competition. Not bad for grapes that have been growing older and wiser in the Tygerberg hills since the mid-1980s.

What Makes Old Vines So Special?

In South Africa, an “old vine” is officially recognised as any grapevine 35 years or older, and our 21 Gables vineyard, planted between 1983-1985, certainly qualifies. But age isn’t merely a number when it comes to heritage vines. These elder statesmen have developed something younger vines simply can’t replicate: character.

21 Gables Chenin Blanc is a winemaker’s dream to work with in the vineyard,” shares our Cellar Master Johan Jordaan. “It is a hands-on wine. You can’t be arrogant around it.”

Over four decades, these old vines have grown deep root systems that make them remarkably resilient. They’ve learned to self-regulate, naturally producing lower yields of intensely concentrated, balanced fruit that expresses the kind of nuanced complexity that comes only with time.

This inherent character is precisely why South Africa became the first country in the world to introduce a certified seal for heritage wines. Through the Old Vine Project, our 21 Gables carries the Certified Heritage Vineyards seal – protecting our viticultural heritage and celebrating wines from vines that have stood the test of time.

A Taste of Living History

Nestled in the ancient Malmesbury shale soils of the Tygerberg hills, where cool Atlantic breezes temper the heat and allow berries an extended hang time, our 21 Gables vineyard represents terroir in its purest form. These small, low-yielding parcels produce wines with natural balance between sugar, acid, and phenolics – requiring minimal cellar intervention and allowing an authentic expression of place.

The 2023 vintage brims with beautiful aromatics of ripe peach, pear, litchi and melon, complemented by citrus rind and white coriander spice notes. Barrel-fermented and matured for 10-12 months in French oak, it’s a wine Johan recommends ageing for up to 10 years.

Patience Is A Virtue

As we celebrate Old Vine Day 2025, we’re reminded that the most rewarding experiences often require patience. Our Grand Master award is wonderful recognition, but the real triumph lies in preserving these remarkable vines and continuing a winemaking tradition that ensures the past can be appreciated in the future.
