5 Stars Get Spier Corks Popping: Our Prestige Cuvée Shines In Platter’s 2025
This year's Platter's Wine Guide has awarded top accolades to three of our wines ranges that couldn't be more different yet share the same dedication to craftmanship: our patient Prestige Cuvée 2016 earned a coveted 5-star rating, while Creative Block 2 2024, Creative Block 3 2021, Creative Block 5 2021 and Farmer Angus Organic Red 2018 landed 4.5 stars.
A Tale of Time, Trust and Love of the Land
If you've visited our farm, you'll know we're not ones to rush things. Our Prestige Cuvée perfectly embodies this philosophy – it's a bottle-fermented sparkling wine crafted in the traditional style, allowing secondary fermentation in the bottle. Made in small batches and only in exceptional vintages, it's a testament to the old adage that you can't hurry nature. This 2016 vintage brings together Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the cool slopes of Elgin, where Atlantic breezes and high-altitude vineyards create ideal conditions for sparkling wine. After 84 months (that's seven years) resting on the lees, it's developed beautiful layers of Golden Delicious apple and citrus, with hints of freshly baked brioche – a wine that makes any moment feel like a celebration.
In a complementary contrast, our Creative Block range tells a different but equally compelling story. A cornerstone of our most accoladed range, this wine mirrors a Spier Arts Trust arts initiative, where artists create works on small canvases. Just as each artwork contributes to a greater collection, our winemaking team carefully selects varietals to craft something greater than the sum of its parts. The result is a range of sophisticated blends that showcases what our Stellenbosch vineyards do best.
Spier has pioneered regenerative organic farming in South Africa, championing sustainable practices that enrich the soil, foster biodiversity, and nurture community. Earning 4.5 stars, Farmer Angus Organic Red 2018 is Spier's flagship organic red blend, born out of this spirit and crafted in collaboration with regenerative farming frontrunner Angus McIntosh—a.k.a Farmer Angus. Offering luscious notes of vanilla and blackcurrant, this blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is a fine expression of Spier's exceptional terroir and farming philosophy.
More Than Just Stars
What really make us proud is knowing these wines reflect our commitment to working with nature. Since 1993, when the Enthoven family first started caring for this historic farm, we've focused on making wines that speak honestly of their place and the people who craft them.
As our Cellar Master Johan Jordaan puts it: "These wines are really about trust – the trust we place in nature's timing, the trust between our vineyard and cellar teams, and most importantly, the trust of the people who choose to share these wines at their tables."
Come visit us at the farm to taste these stars for yourself. After all, good wines are best enjoyed with good company.
