How did you meet?
We met in Brighton (UK) on a night out through a mutual friend almost 10 years ago.
You were the first couple ever to exchange vows on the lawns in front of the historic Manor House. How did that feel?
Incredibly special. Our guests were wowed by the majestic Cape Dutch backdrop and beautiful gardens.
How would you describe the style of your wedding?
We really wanted to retain the spirit of generous, wholesome and unpretentious farm life. We both work in the travel industry, so it made sense that our big day had a central theme of journeys and the coming together of not just two personalities but also two cultures – Spanish and South African.
How did you manage to bring this theme to life?
Elements of our nationalities were reflected in the menu with dishes like Gazpacho shots, Phutu pap and boerewors bites, Salmorejo mousse terrine, and open fire grilled Impala with a fynbos infused hanepoot jus. Our photographer had never tried Olive Oil ice cream before and was literally blown away!
Tell us about your unique guest favours…
Our guests were spoilt with personalised bottles of Olive Oil and Spier Signature Chenin Blanc which they were able to bottle and cork themselves. This interactive and educational activity was one of the highlights for our international guests. At the reception each guest also received a cosy blanket to snuggle up under.
What look and feel did you go for?
The décor captured the essence of the Cape’s indigenous flora with striking King proteas and natural grey foliage as the focal point. Spier’s courtyard, which flanks the Old Wine Cellar, was transformed into a fairy tale al fresco dining and dancing space, with romantic fairly lights and ancient Oak trees overhead. The mood was decidedly rustic and relaxed.
What were the highlights of the day?
The day unfolded spectacularly! The Spier team accompanied us on an outing into the vineyards to capture some special moments with the sunset painting the Helderberg Mountains in the distance in hues of light pink, orange and purple. Festivities continued late into the night, and was aptly rounded off with a traditional Spanish dessert – Milhoja Arequipe – accompanied by a South African favourite: BBQ marshmallows and Amarula shots. While the kids took a nap in the dedicated kiddies corner, the grownups danced the night away under the stars to the funky beats of DJ Pierre. Everything was perfect.
What did you like best about Spier?
We fell in love with Spier because of all the different areas available for the various parts of the day. The hotel accommodation was also very convenient for our guests and we were really impressed with Chef Lolli, Jason and Hannes’ willingness to accommodate all our requests and guide us with their expert advice.
What advice do you have for couples planning their weddings?
Spend time walking and exploring the different areas of the farm to choose exciting locations for the different parts of your day, and also to prepare for your wedding photo shoot. We found this really useful in getting to know the property inside out. Also, listen and take advice from the various experts at Spier – they have your best interest at heart.
