Thirty years is a long time in wine – long enough to see vineyards mature, teams grow and ideas take root. For Frans K. Smit, the work has always been less about the years and more about the people, the land and doing things properly.
Today, on December 4th, Frans reaches an extraordinary milestone: three decades at Spier. Few individuals have shaped our modern story as significantly – and as modestly – as he has.
From Kakamas to the Cellar: How Frans Found His Way to Spier
Born in Windhoek and raised on a table grape farm outside Kakamas, Frans grew up with agriculture in his bones. After graduating among the top of his class at Elsenburg Agricultural College in 1995, he joined Spier the following year – drawn to the potential of a historic farm ready for a new era.
For 25 years, he served as Spier’s Cellar Master – guiding our wines with intuition, technical focus and a rare ability to see both immediate detail and the long-term vision.
In 2021, he stepped into the role of Wines Managing Director of Spier during a challenging time for the industry – shaped by post-pandemic uncertainty and shifting global dynamics. Frans’s response was characteristically grounded: calm leadership, practical optimism and a belief that real progress happens one clear decision at a time.
Setting the Standard with Steady Hands and Clear Vision
Frans’ approach has always been more “let’s taste and think” than “let’s chase trophies”- though the accolades inevitably followed, all of which he accepted with gratitude rather than fanfare.
Under his guidance, Spier was named Editor’s Choice: Winery of the Year 2022 by Platter’s Wine Guide – recognised “for excellence at both the rarified and volume ends of the market.” He has also helped position Spier on the global stage – from international acclaim for our 21 Gables range to upholding Growing for Good initiatives that earn us recognition for our regenerative practices.
Frans views these moments as milestones, not finish lines: “We’ve done well. Now let’s see how much better we can be.” This stewardship extends beyond the cellar, where he champions Spier’s journey toward net-zero carbon alignment by 2030 – emphasising healthier soils, responsible farming and long-term resilience. For him, sustainability is simply “good farming – the kind that lasts.”
A Seat at the Table – And a Name on the Bottle
In 2009, Frans was invited to join the Cape Winemakers Guild, an honour reserved for South Africa’s most accomplished and forward-thinking winemakers. The Guild’s culture of collaboration and continuous learning mirrors his own: taste widely, stay curious and never assume the work is done.
That same year, the flagship wines that bear his name – Frans K. Smit Red and later White – were released. These blends embody his belief in precision, patience and letting a wine take the time it needs. They remain among Spier’s most awarded and sought-after releases.
Beyond the Cellar: The Man Himself
Despite a career full of accolades, Frans has never been one for the spotlight. Ask him about his proudest achievements and he’ll likely mention his team, his daughters or the quiet pleasure of tending a slow braai with a glass of 21 Gables Chenin Blanc in hand.
Whenever he can, he returns to the Kalahari – drawn to its vastness, star-filled nights and the kind of stillness that resets the mind. Those who know him well will tell you he is as loyal to his family (four-legged ones included) as he is to the vineyards he has watched mature.
Thirty Years Later, Still Looking Ahead
Three decades at Spier have brought many chapters: countless harvests, evolving roles, global recognition and seasons that tested resilience and rewarded patience. Through it all, Frans has remained a constant – a steward of land, people and a craft that resists shortcuts.
Thirty years in, he has no interest in standing still. His focus remains where it has always been: on the next season, the next winemaker finding their stride and the next bottle that says something honest about where it comes from.
For that, we’re deeply grateful.
Join us in celebrating Frans with the wines that honour his legacy.
