Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2021 Titled One Of Fnb’s Top 10 Sauvignon Blancs 2022
Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc was titled one of FNB’s 2022 Top 10 Sauvignon Blancs for the second consecutive year.
As South Africa’s favourite white grape, Sauvignon Blanc is one of the wine industry’s most competitive categories.
So it was with great delight that for the second consecutive year, the Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc was titled one of FNB’s 2022 Top 10 Sauvignon Blancs at the award ceremony held on the 13th of October. This accolade is hot off the heels of the recent 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc Double Gold win at the 2022 Veritas Awards.
Initiated in 2007, the annual FNB Sauvignon Blanc SA Top 10 competition aims to promote innovation and excellence of the Sauvignon Blanc cultivar and reward those making wines of true distinction. This year, 102 producers entered 161 wines for this competition, with the top 20 wines hailing from diverse wine regions.
The grapes for the Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc are grown in two distinctive, cool-climate vineyards grown along the slopes of the Tygerberg Hills.
“Planted in weathered shale, the warm days and cool nights mean berry ripening is very controlled. The 24-year-old vines have deep roots that yield fruit with a wonderful saline quality. To create added complexity and layers, we harvest at different ripeness levels. It’s a laborious process, but the effort is worth it,” explains Cellar Master Johan Jordaan.
As Sauvignon Blanc season arrives, surely there is no better choice than serving one of the country’s top 10 zesty whites this summer. Pale lemon-green in glass, the 2021 vintage is bright, fresh and has an invigorating sea-breeze character. Gooseberry and kiwi fruit jostle with the delicate herbal scent of blackcurrant leaf, while the palate is balanced out by refreshing hints of lemongrass and a lip-smacking, saline finish. Serve with lemon butter-fried scallops or ceviche and get ready to kickstart summer 2022!
The 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2021 can be purchased directly from the farm and via Spier’s online store.
