A Signature Move
Spier unveils upgraded label design for beloved Signature Collection The Spier Signature Collection, known for its down-to-earth wines perfect for everyday enjoyment, has received a fresh new look.
In response to the challenge of modernising the brand while retaining its classic elements, packaging experts at Monday Design have worked closely with the Spier team to craft a contemporary aesthetic.
“We wanted to revitalise the Signature Collection to ensure it stands out on shelves,” explains Kathryn Cilliers, Marketing Director at Spier. “However, it was crucial to maintain elements that resonate with our loyal customers. Consumer research played a key role in this process.”
The new design made its debut at the ProWein 2024 trade fair in Düsseldorf this March. This exciting update elevates the packaging, all while staying true to the brand's heritage and commitment to quality.
Looking Back, Going Forward
The new design, created by the talented team at Monday Design in Cape Town, achieves this balance beautifully. The iconic Spier wordmark remains prominent, ensuring instant brand recognition.
“Research revealed that consumers loved our signature wordmark,” says Kathryn. “Keeping it similar was an easy choice.”
A striking new addition is the gable head motif at the top of the label. As a proudly South African winery dating back to 1692, Spier's winemaking heritage is 332 years old, with 21 architecturally significant gables preserved on the farm to this day. The new gable motif pays homage to these gables - the most of any farm in the Cape Winelands.
Another update is that the “Signature Collection” name now takes centre stage, proudly displayed in foil for added elegance. The varietal and vintage information remains clear and concise, with a shift in colour to enhance visual appeal during the purchasing process: green for whites, pink for rosés, and red for reds. For a final touch of distinction, the screw cap has transitioned from black to a sleek gunmetal grey.
New Look, Same Trusted Taste
“This upgrade is a ‘Signature Move’ for Spier,” concludes Kathryn. “The new design reflects the craftsmanship and care that goes into every bottle of Spier wine. Rest assured, while the look may have changed, the exceptional quality and affordability Spier wine lovers have come to know, and love remain the same.”
The Spier Signature Collection offers a selection of seven single varietals and two blends, all crafted by Spier's experienced winemaking team. The range can be tasted and purchased at the farm in Stellenbosch and are widely available at leading retailers and etailers globally, as well as through international partners.
