Learn more about our first estate wine, made from organic vineyards that grow on the Spier farm.
This highly accoladed range of estate wines was handcrafted and bottled at Spier using certified organic grapes grown on this historic Stellenbosch farm.
The grapes for Spier Farm House were harvested from 20ha of carefully tended vines at Spier estate certified organic in 2015, following a conversion process that began in 2008.
In the cellar, Spier’s Organic Winemaker Tania Kleintjes and Cellar Master Johan Jordaan believe in interfering as little as possible. This ensures Spier’s terroir is expressed in all its richness, nuance and complexity. The wines’ natural fermentation occurs within a combination of French oak barrels, ceramic eggs and open-top fermenters.
“Our aim has been to make really good wine in a simple and natural way,” Tania says.
Each label in the range proudly bears “Spier Estate Wine”. South Africa’s Wine and Spirit Board defines an “estate wine” as one where production and bottling take place on the same estate as where the wine’s grapes were grown.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ORGANIC?
- Very simply put, organic wines are produced with organically grown grapes. Organic wines are made from grapes grown organically: an earth-friendly way of farming that embraces the vineyard as a living ecological system. Pest control and soil enrichment is done naturally, without the use of artificial herbicides, fungicides, pesticides or fertilisers.
- Organic wines are set apart by the level of sulphur-dioxide (SO2) in the wine. This needs to be less than 100 ppm sulfites (conventional wine = 160 ppm)
WHAT IS AN ESTATE WINE?
An estate wine is made entirely from grapes grown, made and bottled on the farm—it never leaves the farm during fermentation, ageing, or bottling.
Spier Farm House Organic Chenin Blanc: This wine’s dreamy honeycomb, citrus and apricot flavours are supported by exquisite minerality. Aged for 10 months on the lees, it was made with grapes hand-harvested from a single vineyard recognised as a Certified Heritage Vineyard by the Old Vine Project for being older than 35 years. The 2018 vintage received 4.5 stars from Platter’s.
Spier Farm House Organic Rosé: This silky, full-bodied Shiraz rosé serves up abundant strawberry with hints of vanilla and pepper culminating in a dazzlingly fresh finish. The 2016, 2017 and 2018 vintages each received 4.5 stars from Platter’s.
Spier Farm House Organic Red: This sublimely suave blend of 57% Merlot and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon offers juicy blackberry and chocolate flavours supported by vibrant vanilla and blackcurrant. It was aged in barrels for 12 months, and in bottle for a further six. The 2018 vintage was awarded 4 stars from Platter’s.
