Spier Wines Dazzle Veritas Judges
At the 2020 Veritas Wine Awards on Saturday 14 November 2020, three Spier wines received Double Golds: Creative Block 5 2010, and the 2014 and 2019 vintages of 21 Gables Chenin Blanc.
Considered South Africa’s most illustrious competition, the 2020 edition of Veritas Wine Awards had over 1,300 entries. Spier was one of only three wineries to receive three Double golds; it also received the second-highest number of Gold medals (seven).
These were for:
- Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2013
- Spier Creative Block 3 2017
- Spier Creative Block 3 2010
- Spier Seaward Chardonnay 2019
- Spier Seaward Chenin Blanc 2019
- Spier Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2019 (Woolworths)
- Spier Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 (Woolworths)
“The success of these wines at Veritas recognises our long-held commitment to consistent quality — no matter the style or varietal,” says Cellar Master Frans Smit. “It is particularly encouraging to see the accolades received by our museum class wines. This demonstrates the excellent bottle maturation potential of what we are producing, confirming that our wines are a must for any serious collector’s cellar.”
Spier’s outstanding Veritas results come just a week after news that three Spier wines received the maximum rating of five stars in the brand new 2021 edition of Platter’s, the authoritative guide to South African wine. These were the 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2019, the Frans K. Smit Red 2015 and the Cape Winemakers Guild - Spier Frans K Smit Auction Selection 2017. A whopping 10 further wines received 4.5 stars, the guide’s second-highest rating.
