The COVID-19 pandemic and a domestic ban on alcohol sales present huge challenges to South Africa’s wine industry. This means the support of our valued international customers overseas is even more important than ever.
At Spier, we continue to innovate with new products, and our online store is still taking orders from South African-based customers (to be delivered once regulations permit).
Buy wine and make a difference!
If you live overseas, we encourage you to replenish your wine rack with South African wines. Your purchase contributes to supporting approximately 300,000 people in the South African wine industry, and filling your glass with Spier wine positively impacts #487jobs.

Total Wine & More
With your continued support over the last 4 months, Spier has been able to continue investing in Spier Growing for Good, a wide range of initiatives that empower communities to create social and environmental change. In recent months, we’ve also:
- Been able to keep employing all 487 of our employees, thus ensuring that they could continue to provide for their families
- Continued to work with and support the five micro-enterprises that we helped entrepreneurs to launch. The most recent business we’ve incubated is WASLab, —South Africa’s first black-owned wine analysis laboratory — which former Spier employee Merecia Smith established last year. The lab provides analyses that are crucial to our winemaking processes. Through being designated an essential business, WASLab has been able to carry on operating throughout the lockdown and this has ensured the continued employment of its three staff members.
- Provided food (in collaboration with the Sustainability Institute), hygiene and education packs to almost 400 families in vulnerable nearby communities during Level 5 of lockdown. Under the current Level 3 regulations, we support 61 vulnerable families - 20 families in the Lynedoch Valley with food parcels, and 41 Vlottenburg families with weekly food vouchers.
- Recruited 13 members of the local community to speed up food production at Spier and to receive hands-on training on how to grow their own fresh, nutritious produce at home.
