The power of Cape healing herbs

15 September 2025

Our spa’s wellness philosophy is rooted in ancient plant wisdom and modern skin science.

Located within the extraordinary biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom, our spa offers a restorative experience with a special focus on preventative therapies designed to stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Our regenerative approach to farming finds expression in the healing and nourishing benefits of antioxidant-rich indigenous botanicals and healing herbs that either grow wild on the farm or are cultivated in our dedicated Mother Garden. There is a deep connection to ‘place’ when nature is your apothecary. Resident runner ducks provide natural protection from pests, ensuring a chemical-free environment, while the cultivating, harvesting and drying of ingredients destined for the spa are overseen by our resident phytotherapist, Dr Caren Hauptfleisch.

Every wellness journey is unique and begins with an in-depth consultation to choose the most beneficial treatments from a thoughtfully considered menu, curated by spa director, Claudia van Wyk. Herbal teas are foundational to our philosophy, and a rejuvenating blend of rooibos, Cape mint, rose malva, and African lemongrass is always on offer.

Addressing ageing at a cellular level

Rather than promising quick fixes, Claudia has developed a holistic approach that addresses the factors that accelerate ageing at a cellular level. “It’s impossible to evaluate beauty without investing in the care of what’s inside the body,” she explains.

Her philosophy is based on four scientific foundations that have been identified as the primary culprits of premature ageing: oxidation from environmental toxins and lifestyle factors, glycation from refined sugars that damage proteins and DNA, methylation disruption that affects gene activation, and chronic inflammation that attacks healthy cells.

An integrated approach to wellness

These four foundations support key health pillars that encompass our integrated approach to wellness, including the science of touch, optimal skincare, the importance of relaxation and movement, and the impact of healing, nourishing food on the gut – the delicate biome where 80 percent of our immune system is formed.

While a massage is inherently relaxing, studies show that therapeutic touch reduces inflammation-causing cytokines while stimulating mitochondria for energy and cellular repair. Deep tissue massage also decreases cortisol levels and boosts immunity.

Nature-crafted skincare

Exclusive to our spa is the 100-percent natural, locally made Vine Therapy skincare range, scientifically developed by Claudia following four years of research. Free from synthetic fragrances, parabens and mineral oils, it meets her exacting standards for petrochemical-free formulations and represents a powerful fusion of aromatherapy oils, botanical extracts, and medicinal Cape herbs. Vine Therapy restores balance and nourishes the skin, supporting natural healing processes on a cellular level and slowing visible signs of ageing.

Cape Herbal Bath House Experience

Our soil-to-spa philosophy is best exemplified in the Cape Herbal Bath House Experience, our three-hour signature treatment which begins with a refining full-body exfoliation using pressed and crushed grape seeds. Unlike harsher exfoliants, this gentle yet effective scrub hydrates while it polishes, removing dead skin cells while delivering natural antioxidants and vitamins. The treatment continues with a restorative herbal immersion in a bath blend of rooibos, rose pelargonium, gotu kola, and Cape rose. The floral nature of this blend soothes both body and mind, while enhancing gentle restoration of skin tone and elasticity. The ritual concludes with a full-body River Stone massage using stones collected from the Eerste River running through the farm. The bath house can be booked for one or two guests.

Farm-infused spa favourites

Our Wildcrafted Facial is described by Claudia as a full body reset. It begins with aromatherapy oils tailored to your individual needs, followed by a therapeutic back massage focusing on muscles that contribute to facial tension. Dr Caren, who is a qualified and experienced practitioner of the science-based, medicinal use of plants, adds wild-harvested herbs to distilled water, restructuring it with the life force of the plants. The treatment also incorporates the Vine Therapy range to stimulate collagen and elastin production while supporting the skin’s natural healing response.

The River Stone Massage uses stones intuitively chosen by our therapists for their energy, shape, and connection to the land. Heated to a perfect temperature, these smooth river stones melt away muscle tension, reduce inflammation, and stimulate circulation while deeply relaxing the nervous system and lowering cortisol levels. In the Organic Herbal Massage, hand-harvested snowbush bundles from the garden are used in rhythmic strokes using an aromatherapy oil blend matched to your needs, from restful sleep to emotional support.

With its access to the spa pool, garden views, wine fridge, candy-striped stools, and rich velvet drapes, our Mani-Pedi Lounge is the boudoir setting you didn’t know you needed for deep conversation and deeper relaxation. With four chairs, it’s ideal for a group of friends or a multi-generational outing dedicated to beauty and bonding.

Reconnecting with nature’s rhythms

Wellness at Spier extends far beyond our apothecary-inspired spa with its inviting relaxation areas and cocooning treatment rooms. Dr Caren is available for phytotherapy consultations in her private practice located in a repurposed stable block near the food garden. She also offers fynbos tea tastings and guided walks through the garden to learn more about the many benefits of plants in nature’s pharmacy, especially the healing properties of herbs.

Our Mindful Movement Studio offers yoga, Pilates, breath work and meditation or a combination of several therapies in one session. From sunrise yoga sessions and breath work in the studio to a meditative walk along the riverbank or a cycle along one of our bike trails through the fynbos, time here deepens connection to nature and to yourself.

Whether staying with us or dropping in as a day visitor, spending time on the farm always feels like therapy. Combine a spa visit with a stroll across the farm, exploring the River Walk or The Wilds. Visit Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery, relax on the lawns with a picnic lunch, or enjoy a meal in the Garden Room or Werf restaurants in the hotel.

In a wellness landscape crowded with promises, what sets us apart is our emphasis on science-based plant wisdom. We believe in honouring the body’s unique responses and supporting its remarkable natural ability to heal. There is no better place than our botanical-inspired spa to embark on a transformative journey of self-renewal that can be sustained forever.

Why not extend your wellness journey with an overnight stay? The longer you stay with us, the more time you’ll have to fully embrace everything our farm offers, from dawn yoga sessions to sunset wine tastings. For hotel and spa bookings, please contact reservations@spier.co.za
