Things to Do at Spier This Winter

06 May 2025

Winter at Spier moves to its own rhythm – quieter, more reflective, yet just as beautiful. We take our cue from the vines: as they rest, we embrace the season to pause, rejuvenate and reconnect.

Here are six experiences to enjoy, come rain or shine, on our farm this winter:

1. Savour a Winter Soup & Wine Pairing

Step in from the cold and discover our new seasonal wine and soup pairing at our tasting room, available from 1 May to 30 September 2025. This cosy tasting features three hearty, farm-fresh soups paired with award-winning wines that complement every warming spoonful.

The experience begins with a velvety white bean and truffle soup served with a garden mushroom toastie, perfectly matched with our Creative Block 5 2021. Next, a charred tomato soup with parmesan toastie is served with our Seaward Chardonnay 2024, followed by pumpkin velouté topped with goat’s cheese foam, perfectly complemented by our 21 Gables Pinotage 2020. For those with a sweet tooth, a surprise chocolate brownie awaits as a delightful finale.

2. Book a Winter Wellness Farm Stay

Our newly reimagined hotel offers a sanctuary for those seeking respite from winter’s chill. Our Winter Wellness Farm Stay Package invites you to spend three nights where misty mornings give way to guided farm walks through dew-covered landscapes, fireside wine tastings and warming farm fare at our restaurant tables.

The package includes accommodation in a Luxury Garden Room, daily breakfast, curated wine experiences featuring our award-winning reds and a couples massage at our Cape Herbal Spa.

Available 1 May to 31 August. Book online.

3. Treat Yourself at Our Cape Herbal Sanctuary

Our thoughtfully designed spa becomes particularly inviting in winter – a place where some well-deserved R&R happens amidst vintage apothecary-style decor and our rewilded Cape gardens. The 120-minute signature Cape Herbal Bath House experience begins with thorough exfoliation using botanicals harvested from our farm, followed by a restorative herbal soak and expert massage in a purpose-built sanctuary space.

Our resident phytotherapist Dr Caren curates personalised treatments using remedies that is grown, harvested and dried on our farm. After your treatment, linger in our infrared sauna, embrace cold therapy or join complimentary fireside yoga sessions in our movement studio overlooking mist-shrouded vineyards.

Individual treatments from R850; Cape Herbal Bath House Experience R1,950 per person. Booking essential.

4. Take Your Seat at our 2025 Winemaker Dinner Series

There’s something deeply satisfying about gathering around good food and wine while the wind and rain howl outside. Our 2025 Winemaker Dinner Series opens the doors to our beautifully restored Manor House for six intimate evenings with the men and women who tend our vineyards and craft our wines vintage after vintage.

Limited to just 22 guests seated at one long table, each dinner focuses on a single grape variety showcased in its various expressions. These varietal voyages are paired with four-course meals drawing inspiration from our farm’s winter bounty:

R850 per person includes a four-course meal with paired wines. Booking essential.

5. Feast at Veld and The Garden Room

Our newly transformed hotel restaurants offer two distinctive dining experiences that celebrate our winter garden’s bounty. At the glass-walled Garden Room, breakfast and lunch are served with views across our rewilded Cape garden and heated pool. As evening falls, dinner shifts to plant-filled Veld, where our open-plan kitchen and winter menu follow the season’s natural rhythms.

Winter at Veld features favourites like Farmer Angus’ slow-braised beef brisket with herbed dumplings, or roasted butternut risotto finished with brown sage butter and herbs from our Food Garden. The adjacent Wine Library invites exploration of our cellar’s finest.

Veld dinner reservations are essential. The Garden Room welcomes walk-ins for lunch daily.

6. Glide Along with a Segway Tour

From 5 May until the end of August, we’re offering a special 25% discount on our popular Segway farm tours for South African residents (four or more guests).

This unique one-hour experience begins with a thorough training session before taking you through our farm plains to our organic block of Chenin Blanc. Here, surrounded by the magnificent Stellenbosch mountains, you’ll learn how we implement organic farming techniques that create our award-winning wines while using regenerative agriculture practices.

For early risers, our 9:00 am tour offers an additional discount at R420 per person, while those preferring evening light can book our 17:30 tour at R650 per person to catch the farm bathed in winter’s golden hour.

Segways are not suitable for children under 10 years, but families with younger children (5-9 years) can book an e-scooter option. Book here.
