Chenin Champions: Our Double Master Win At The Global Chenin Blanc Masters
Our 21 Gables and Good Natured Chenin Blancs secure coveted Master medals at the 2024 Global Chenin Blanc Masters
We’re thrilled to announce that at the recently-held 2024 Global Chenin Blanc Masters, our wines not only participated but triumphed, bringing home two of only five Master medals awarded in the entire competition.
Our award-winning wines are as follows:
Master Medal (97-100 points):
Silver Medal (89-92 points)
The Master Medal is the competition's highest honour. To receive one Master is a massive achievement, but to secure two is unprecedented. As a result, our Cellar Master Johan Jordaan will be featured in the drinks business’ prestigious Top 100 Master Winemaker 2025 article.
The winning wines were described as "outstanding examples of their type, showing impeccable winemaking" and delighted judges with their "wonderful texture, perfect balance and broad range of delicious, persistent flavours."
Spier's impressive showing included awards for all three of its entered Chenin Blancs, with our Seaward Chenin Blanc 2023 securing a prestigious Silver medal.
Our Cellar Master, Johan Jordaan, was excited about the results: "Chenin Blanc is a wine built in layers. While it's a winemaker's dream to work with, it also demands a hands-on approach. Seeing our Chenins consistently recognised on the global stage is a testament to the dedication of our entire team."
Our 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2022, crafted from old vines with some parcels up to 37 years old, showcases our commitment to preserving and nurturing these vinous treasures. Meanwhile, our Good Natured Chenin Blanc 2023 exemplifies our dedication to organic and regenerative practices, proving that wines made with nature in mind can achieve the highest levels of quality.
These awards reaffirm South Africa's position as a leading producer of fine Chenin Blanc wines alongside renowned regions like the Loire Valley in France and select areas in Western Australia. More importantly, they highlight our role in elevating this versatile grape on the world stage.
