Exciting Change For Spier Secret Festival
It’s that time of the year again, and we’re excited to announce the details for the fourth annual Spier Secret Festival taking place at Spier Wine Farm from 29 - 31 October.
The fourth annual Spier Secret Festival – a food and wine event focusing on ethical production, sustainable practices and trends – returns to Spier wine farm in October 2015. This year’s festival will take place around the recently restored historical Spier Werf, where a whole new Spier experience is unfolding.
The festival launches a planned bakery and café run by one of South Africa's top chefs, a farmer's market and a boutique estate wine cellar. Spier Secret delegates will be the first to sample the brand new Spier Werf experience.
On Friday 30 October 2015, local and international experts on food and wine will present talks and hands-on workshops to small groups. Delegates will be divided into smaller groups that will rotate between speakers’ workshops to ensure quality time with speakers and a more intimate skill sharing experiences.
To date the following speakers have been confirmed:
- Andrew Merritt and Paul Smyth: The duo behind Something & Son, a social design practice based in London, that tackles social and environmental challenges. The duo's most famous projects include Farm: Shop in Hackney, Future Baroque at the Tate Modern and Compost Tea Bar at the Victoria & Albert Museum. (www.somethingandson.com)
- PJ Vadas: A chef devoted to the idea of sustainable dining, PJ has worked for Gordon Ramsay in the UK and US, he is also the former Eat Out Top 10 chef at Roundhouse and Camphors.
- Zayaan Khan: South Africa’s leading expert in entomophagy (the practice of eating insects).
- Luke Williams: Owner of Culture Club Cheese, Cape Town's first fermented product hot house.
- Frans Smit: Spier Cellar Master and member of the esteemed Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG).
On Saturday 31 October, the all-day annual Spier Secret Market will offer Spier wine, food from selected local producers and farm-style kids’ activities. Entry is free.
In the lead up to the festival, a number of South Africa's innovative foodies will host a series of Secret Dinners.
The festival includes interactive Food Movie Nights in collaboration with Abigail Donnelly, editor of Eat Out magazine and food editor of Woolworths TASTE. Guests will watch a classic food movie and eat what the characters in the movie are eating, at the exact moment they are eating it. Due to popular demand the movie night have been extended to additional performances.
