Old Roots, New Vines: Bringing Life To The Vineyard

Sometimes vines won't grow when planted out in the rows; they die off, leaving empty pockets within a vineyard block. At Spier, we replace these dead vines with new vines of the same rootstock and clone as the rest of the block.

This year we had to replace 650 plants in total.

From these photos you can see the rich and fertile soil in our Helderberg vineyards. We rented the digger to carve deep holes. We then added lime, phosphates and fertilisers to the soil and mixed well.

The new vines were planted a week later. It is important to fertilise these new vines well, and provide ample water as the older vines next to them provides competition.



These vines will bear grapes in about three years from now.
