What inspires your range of products?
I strongly believe in supporting local, small businesses and artists as much as possible, sourcing products that are locally and ethically produced with an awareness for the environment. These are items that “speak” of our beautiful country. My approach is very much in keeping with Spier’s ethos of local, sustainable, recycling and reusing where possible.
What inspired the development of this Spier Recycled Range?
I recognised an opportunity where existing Spier items such as wine bottles, wine labels and the Spier newspaper could be developed into beautiful gifts and homeware, giving new purpose to old materials. It makes so much sense to take existing material (which may normally be disposed of or recycled) and use it to create something that are aesthetically appealing.
What products make up this range?
The Recycled Candle: This uses a variety of the Spier wine bottles, which are cut down and filled with a lovely Spier “Secret Scent”, using Spier wine labels on the bottle that are no longer in production and then packaged in a beautiful box finished off with the wine label, Spier ribbon and Spier swing tag, resulting in a unique Spier product.
The Recycled Vases, Glasses, Tea Light Candle Holders and Filled Candles: Again, using the recycled Spier wine bottles cut down to various sizes, sandblasted with a variety of the illustrations inspired by Spier stories and history.
The Recycled Carrier Bag: Old editions of the Spier newspaper have been converted into carrier bags that are for sale and are also used for purchases at the Spier Shop.
Who makes the products?
The majority of the products available have been sourced locally, having been made by local small businesses, an artist, a local goldsmith, a community of women in a village in KwaZulu-Natal. Spier tries where possible to support NGOs within South Africa.
