Spier Canned Wines: Your Questions Answered
Spier recently launched its range of premium canned wines. Get the low down on what makes this an essential summer staple for picnics, the poolside and beyond.
What are the advantages of canned wines?
Not only are they quick to chill but they’re also light and compact: much easier, in other words, to stack, pack and carry than bottles. There’s also no risk of broken glass, making cans terrific for on-the-go adventures like camping or picnics.
Does canning a wine affect its taste?
Not at all: the cans retain all the aromas and flavours that Spier’s bottled wines are renowned for.
Is it true that they’ve got green credentials?
Yes! As they’re made of aluminium, they’re infinitely recyclable; they also have a smaller carbon footprint than glass bottles.
Why are they 250ml?
This is an ideal size: like a carafe, they’re small enough to have on your own but they’re big enough to share.
When should I drink it?
Cans are not meant for aging. They’re ideal to buy now and drink tonight: pick it up on the way home and pop it in the fridge.
How do I drink it?
These wines are best served chilled, in a glass or tumbler.
Which one should I buy?
Depends on what you’re in the mood for! The refreshing Sauvignon Blanc offers gooseberries, passion fruit and green fig. The sophisticated Rosé has an abundance of strawberry, raspberry and apple blossoms while the Merlot is all about red berries, cherries and hints of mint. Still can’t decide? Why don’t you get all three!
Where can I get hold of them?
They’re currently available from the Spier Tasting Room and online from R35 each.
