Art Exhibition: Diane Victor
The work of contemporary artist Diane Victor, whose politically-engaged career spans more than 40 years, will be exhibited at Spier. The new exhibition coincides with the launch of her book, PRINT, DRAWINGS, SMOKE.
Victor is known for her drawings and prints that delve deep into the complexities of South African society. Always subtle, nuanced and provocative, her work explores the darker side of humanity. From corruption and inequalities to women’s ongoing social struggles, Victor challenges her audiences to face the inherent vulnerability of life.
Her graphic works, almost all in black and white, intelligently reference art history and mythology, while revealing her unrivalled mastery of printmaking and drawing. Victor’s insights and originality – she constantly explores new techniques and mediums such as ash and candle soot – have ensured her position at the forefront of the South African and international art scene for many years.
Spier Arts Trust will hold an exhibition of her work at the Old Wine Cellar from 18 February to 18 April 2023 (Note that the exhibition will be closed from 13-29 March). Victor’s book, PRINT, DRAWINGS, SMOKE from French publishers Mare et Martin, will also be launched on the opening day of the exhibition. Featuring a selection of prints, drawings and smoke drawings, the book documents 40 years of the virtuoso’s career and provides a stylistic analysis of her work.
