A Family Farm
Continuing a long-held tradition, Spier is a family-owned farm. The current owners acquired the farm in 1993 and, along with managing the farming operations, work closely to ensure that their guiding values manifest across the business.

Taste over 300 years of winemaking heritage.
Situated near Stellenbosch, Spier is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms with a recorded winemaking history dating back to 1692. While rooted in this heritage, we've got a vibrant and conscious energy, and are home to one of the largest collections of contemporary South African art.
Our wines are among the most awarded in the country. Visit us, and enjoy them paired with wholesome, tasty food made with ingredients grown either on our farm or by trusted, nearby farmers. If you feel like lingering, our Hotel offers an inspiring Winelands getaway in the tranquillity of nature.

Good to the earth. Good to people.
Our free-roaming livestock and chickens are reared in pastures without the use of antibiotics or hormones, while fruit, vegetables and vines on our farm grow without artificial fertiliser or pesticides. Extensive tracts of alien vegetation have been removed, and more than a million indigenous plants replanted. 100% of black- and grey-water and more than 98% of solid waste is recycled.
Spier's Growing for Good initiatives empower communities to make positive social and environmental change. These include Tree-preneurs, which encourages people in impoverished communities to grow trees in exchange for essential goods. A number of programmes also offer young people work experience, training and mentorship in hospitality, agriculture, wine and art.

Responsible Sourcing.
We join hands with our suppliers to ensure integrity and fairness throughout our supply chain, across all our operations. The agreed commitments of the Spier Ethical Code of Conduct promote a healthy business ecosystem where people are respected, valued, and empowered; where natural resources and the environment are protected, and where our businesses actively inspire and support the development of resilient local communities.
We are committed to supporting our partners to help them go beyond minimum requirements to bring about innovations and transformations that create a more just and sustainable world.

Certifications and accolades.
Spier has been recognised by a number of external organisations for its commitment to sustainability and ethical business. Our ethical supply chain is compliant with leading certifications such as Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA) and amfori BSCI. EnviroWines® accreditation attests to our earth-friendly methods of production. This incorporates two key certifications — the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and the International Federation of Wine and Spirits (FIVS) — as well as South Africa’s Integrated Production of Wine (IPW). Compliance requires environmental stewardship at every stage of production — from vine to bottle — while also tracking carbon footprint.
Our farm is organically certified and was awarded Conservation Champion status by WWF-SA. Our Hotel was one of the first in the country to receive Fair Trade in Tourism (FTTSA) accreditation; it also won gold at the African Responsible Tourism Awards 2016 in the category of Best Accommodation for Responsible Employment. Our winery is FSSC 22000 certified, Control Union Vegan accredited and won the Amorim Biodiversity Award at the 2019 Drinks Business Green Awards.
