Coastal Region – Paarl, Wellington, Darling, Stellenbosch, Tygerberg
TERROIR / SOIL:
The terroir ranges from weathered shale to deep decomposed granite soils with clay subsoil. The medium soil fertility leads to medium growth and medium-to-low yields, resulting in balanced and pure wines.
VINEYARD AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS:
The 2016 growing season was quite dry. Harvest began about two weeks earlier than normal. The fruit was very healthy and we were able to pick earlier, allowing us to make well-balanced wines. The vines are13- to 18-years-old. Supplementary drip irrigation is used only in extreme drought conditions.
After handpicking and crushing, the grape varieties were fermented individually and matured for 12 months in French oak barrels (20% new, 50% second fill and 30% third fill) before tasting and blending. This Rhône-style blend has medium intensity and fine tannins.
