Seaborne Red Reserve
Rhône style blend: 59% Shiraz, 31% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsaut, 5% Grenache
WINEMAKER:
Johan Jordaan
ORIGIN:
Coastal Region – Paarl, Wellington, Darling, Stellenbosch, Tygerberg
TERROIR / SOIL:
The terroir ranges from deep decomposed granite soils with clay subsoil to weathered shale. The medium soil fertility leads to medium growth and medium-to-low yields, resulting in balanced and pure wines.
VINEYARD AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS:
The 2017 growing season was quite dry. The fruit was very healthy; being able to pick two weeks earlier than usual helped make an excellently balanced wine that showcases clean fruit characteristics. The vines are 14 to 20 years old. Supplementary drip irrigation is used in extreme drought conditions.
WINEMAKING:
Grapes were picked by hand, crushed and fermented. All the varieties were fermented individually and matured in 20% new oak barrels, 50% second fill and 30% third fill French oak barrels. The wine matured for 12 months in oak before tasting and blending.
APPEARANCE:
Medium ruby red
TASTING NOTE:
This wine represents a Rhône-style blend with medium intensity, firm structure and fine tannins. Enjoy beautiful flavours of violets, mulberry, juicy red plum and subtle spice which lead to a smooth and rounded finish.
SERVE WITH:
A plate of cured meats and savoury fruit preserves or a mild red curry with aubergine, red peppers and mushrooms.
