The three-year Spier Arts Academy Apprenticeship Programme develops master artisan skills in the mediums of ceramics and mosaic. Founded in 2009, the first mosaic class graduated in 2011 while the ceramic apprentices began training in 2015. There is an intake of roughly 30 apprentices per year.

The Creative Block project invites select artists (ranging from emerging talents to established heavyweights) to transform the blocks in any medium they choose. The best are purchased immediately for resale at R1500 each. Together they showcase a rich, contrasting and extensive representation of African art.

The project was initiated to enable artists to earn an immediate income and to break out into new artistic territories.

Blocks can be exchanged — which invites creative play as collectors arrange, rearrange and add new blocks to their collections.

The project inspired the Creative Block wine range by Spier.
