21 Gables Chenin Blanc: A Top 10 Triumph For The Fourth Time
Spier’s 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2017 has been recognised as one of South Africa’s best Chenin Blancs through its inclusion in the Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge. This is the fourth time the 21 Gables Chenin has been included in the Top 10.
Spier’s 21 Gables range pays tribute to more than 300-years of winemaking heritage and its unique architectural legacy: an unrivalled 21 Cape Dutch Gables– all beautifully preserved.
“This wine started out life in a gnarled 40-year-old granddaddy of a vineyard. An old soul with depth, richness and creaminess that’s like a night at the opera. Pale gold, well integrated and hitting all the high notes with its complexity, it plays beautifully on the palate. Our great national treasure - South African Chenin – is alive and well.”
JACQUES ERASMUS, SENIOR WHITE WINEMAKER, SPIER
In the glass:
The first impression delivers wafts and soft aromas of dried apricots with an oak and vanilla undertow. On the palate, there’s an inescapable rounded richness of flavour and high acidity, butter, biscuit and creamy notes, with a long finish. Within the layers of flavour, white flesh peaches, almond paste and windfall oranges contribute to the story of a complex, well-pedigreed Chenin of quite some depth.
Enjoy this South African icon chilled on its own on hot summer days, or pair it with fynbos honey and spice-infused duck or Cape-style pickled fish.
