Spier Crowned Best Accommodation For Responsible Employment In Africa
Spier was awarded gold at the African Responsible Tourism Awards 2016 in the category of Best for Accommodation for Responsible Employment in a special ceremony at World Travel Market Africa in Cape Town last week.
Companies making up the longlist were scrutinised by judges on the lookout for businesses able to demonstrate an exemplary responsible approach to the employment and treatment of staff.
“The Gold went to Spier for the transparent reporting and the breadth of their approach to improving the employment conditions of their staff,” said the judges. “This ranged from addressing the issue of safety on public transport to their provision of Individual Learning Spend budgets. ILS supports the development of skills and knowledge – for personal development and innovation for the employee and their family – for example by using it to pay school fees.”
Spier has a strong focus on local employment, internal development and promotions, a living wage and firm commitment to learning. Progress in these areas are measured monthly, and reported quarterly.
“We are delighted that our efforts to grow our staff, and inspire positive change in our community and beyond, has been recognised with this prestigious award,” says Spier CEO Andrew Milne.
This is not the first time Spier has been recognised as an ethical employer. In 2003, its hotel was one of the first in South Africa to be awarded the Fair Trade in Tourism accreditation, and in 2013 also attained second place in its category for Hospitality in Southern Africa at the Deloitte Best Company to Work For survey.
