Spier Wins Best In Arts & Culture At The 2025 Best Of Wine Tourism Awards
The Best Of Wine Tourism & Ambassador Awards celebrate innovation and excellence in wine tourism throughout the greatest wine regions in the world and South Africa. Discover why our living gallery of South African art has captured the world's attention.
We're incredibly honoured to announce that Spier has been recognised as the winner in the Arts & Culture category at the prestigious Best Of Wine Tourism Awards for 2025! This international accolade, part of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network's annual competition, celebrates excellence in wine tourism across the globe.
A Living Gallery
Art is everywhere at Spier. From the Tasting Room to the Manor House, restaurants, and shops - it's in our DNA. We believe in the power of art to help see the world differently, and so we use our farm as a living gallery to make it accessible to everyone who visits us. Managed by the Spier Arts Trust, our Spier Art Collection is one of the country’s largest contemporary South African art collections. With over 3,200 artworks, visitors can explore more than 1,000 pieces displayed across our property, including permanent exhibitions like the outdoor Spier Mosaic Kraal and 31 large-scale sculptures. A standout piece is Marco Cianfanelli’s The Dying Slave, featuring nine soaring columns spanning 42.6 square metres.
Bringing Art to Life
Beyond our permanent exhibits, we continually host events that celebrate art in all its forms. We've proudly collaborated with Third World Bunfight, a renowned performing arts company, bringing unique experiences to our farm. These included "Constellations," an intimate outdoor theatre experience, and "Talking Heads," an innovative intellectual speed-dating concept. We also hosted the Spier Harvest of the Arts, featuring a mix of music, theatre, poetry, and storytelling.
"A Summer Dream" held annually in December, combines visual and performing arts for a multi-sensory experience. Held for the first time earlier this year, "Routes of Sound," offered guests a musical tour of the farm, with performances at various locations across the property.
Our annual Spier Light Art event is the most popular attraction, turning the farm into an evening showcase of light installations and imaginative artworks. These events keep Spier a lively place for art and culture year-round.
Out The Box Thinking
One of the best examples of where wine and art come together is our Creative Block project. Started in 2004, Creative Block invites established and emerging artists to create works on small blank blocks. To date, we've purchased over 17,500 pieces from more than 288 artists, providing them with a vital source of income while expanding our collection. This project not only bolsters our collection but also provides a vital source of income for these artists, contributing to one of the most extensive contemporary South African art collections.
We're deeply grateful for this recognition from the Best Of Wine Tourism Awards. It reaffirms our commitment to art as one of our Growing for Good initiatives that help bring about positive social and environmental change. Whether you're drawn to visual art, fine wine, or simply seeking inspiration in a beautiful setting, art can create conversations and stimulate thinking. We invite you to come to explore our living gallery and see for yourself why our farm has captured the world's attention.
