Success For Spier At The Decanter World Wine Awards 2014
Spier scooped an international trophy, two regional trophies and gold, silver and bronze medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2014 at last night’s ceremony in London. More than 15000 wines from 47 countries were judged by 224 wine experts, making this the world’s largest and most influential wine competition
The Spier Creative Block 3 2011 won the International Trophy for Red Rhône Varietals under £15, winning plaudits for its “lovely complex nose of coffee and smoke over generous black fruit” as well as its “delicious pure and vibrant fruit on the palate” and “excellent spiciness balancing with layers of complexity”. It was also commended for its “fine-grained tannins and superb freshness with lingering dark fruit, and a savoury, smoky finish”.
The Spier 21 Gables Pinotage 2011 won the Regional Trophy for best South African Single-Varietal Red over £15, earning praise for its “high-voltage personality” while the Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2012 won Regional Trophy for best South African Chenin Blanc over £15, and was described as a “quintessential South African Chenin in an understated style”, acclaimed for being “vibrant and expressive – a really tasty example”.
The success of the Spier 21 Gables range continued with a gold medal for the Sauvignon Blanc 2013 and silver medals for the range’s Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 and Pinotage 2012. Silver medals were also given the Savanha Naledi Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 and Spier Signature Sauvignon Blanc 2011.
