Get On Your Bike
Hop onto one of the bright yellow Qhubeka Buffalo Bicycles at the entrance of Spier Hotel to explore the farm. Grab a kid’s bike (training wheels available) so the little ones can join the adventure! These sturdy bicycles are ideal for our rustic farm roads, assembled in South Africa and distributed across the country by NGO Qhubeka. Hop On For A Segway Adventure
Experience the splendour of the Cape Winelands on board a Segway. Glide through the vineyards, breathe in the fresh air and savour the views of the Stellenbosch mountains. It’s an exhilarating, two-wheeled, battery-powered ride so you won’t work up a sweat.
Lace Up Your Shoes
Explore our working farm with a 5km or 10km walk or run. All routes are safe to use and clearly marked so you won’t get lost, but grab a map from reception anyway. You can also choose one of our self-guided audio tours covering Spier’s art collection, 300-year winemaking heritage and sustainable farming practices.
Craft Market Fun
Stroll through our vibrant craft market to find the perfect memento or special gift. Support local artisans – and watch them at work – by choosing from a colourful assortment of artworks and handmade products, including paintings, aluminium sculptures, wooden carvings, jewellery, ceramics, textiles and leathers. All artisans have been selected for their quality and individuality. Want to make something yourself? Learn the basics from an artisan of your choice.
Eagle Encounters
Get up close and personal with eagles, hawks, falcons, owls, kites and buzzards. Closer to the ground, you can learn about snakes and lizards. Eagle Encounters has been rehabilitating and releasing birds of prey, and promoting conservation and education on land donated by Spier for two decades. These birds are natural pest controllers so no need for pesticides on the farm.

Kids have their very own clubhouse for scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, board games, ball games, music and story time. Meet birds of prey at Eagle Encounters, race around the farm on a bike (training wheels available) then stop at the historic Werf – a natural playground of boulders and trees. Don’t forget to explore the Elemental Garden with its tunnel, swing and water quadrant. Finish off the day with a grape juice tasting experience.
Make A Difference
Spier’s wide range of Growing for Good initiatives empower our local communities to bring about positive social and environmental change. With Time for Good, hotel guests are invited to be a part of the action! Make your visit to our historic wine farm meaningful, moving and memorable. What will it be: getting your hands dirty, planting trees or volunteering in our food garden? Harvesting and tasting wine in our organic vineyard? Cooking soup for the community in winter? Just Breathe
While there is plenty to do at Spier, having a holiday is also about relaxing and taking it easy. Read a book on a bench beside the river, stroll meditatively through the natural splendour of the farm, or close your eyes under the shade of an ancient oak tree and just breathe in the fresh farm air. Find a serene spot to savour a glass of your favourite Spier wine. Books are available at reception.
Game Time
Ditch digital and go analogue. We have plenty of good, old-fashioned board games to keep you entertained. From chess to dominoes and everything else in between, now’s the time to turn off your devices and reconnect with a little piece of unplugged pleasure. Select your favourite option from reception and head to the Hotel Restaurant or lounge to play. Soccer balls, cricket sets and lawn games are also available.
Visit Our Food Garden
Witness what farm to fork really means at the Spier Food Garden. We harvest farm-fresh fruit, herbs, salad greens and vegetables to use at our restaurants and sell at our online shop and Spier Farm Café. Explore the seasonal bounty and ask our gardeners for advice on growing your own food at home. Be sure to say hello to the gaggle of Indian Runner Ducks – they’re taking care of pest control in the most natural way.
Slip Into Your Bathing Suit
Cool off in one of our refreshing swimming pools, which are exclusive to hotel guests. You can order drinks and snacks at the main pool next to the Hotel Restaurant or splash about in one of the pools inside the private courtyards. Bedrooms are clustered around six private courtyards, each with its own splash pool.
