WINEMAKER: Heidi Dietstein
ORIGIN: Western Cape
TERROIR / SOIL: The terroir ranges from deep, decomposed granite soils with clay subsoil to weathered shale. The medium soil fertility leads to medium growth and medium-to-low yields, which results in balanced and pure wines.
VINEYARD AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS: The 2018 growing season was quite dry. The onset of the harvest was about two weeks earlier than normal. The fruit was very healthy, and we were able to pick earlier, allowing for a more balanced wine, with good, clean fruit and a firm structure. The vines are 14- to 20-years-old. Supplementary drip irrigation is used in extreme drought conditions.
WINEMAKING: Hand-picked grapes were crushed and fermented. Each variety was fermented individually and matured for 14 months in 300L oak barrels: 30% new, 20% second fill and 50% third fill (75% French and 25% American). The wine was blended and matured for a further 2 months before bottling.
