"Here's impressive value in well defined, Euro-feeling cabernet with some South African oomph! It has quite a deep colour. The nose is plenty generous with ripe blackcurrant/blackberry, some celery leaf, menthol tobacco and a touch of tar. It is medium-full bodied, fairly dense, in-filled and fairly tannic, with jammy berry fruit hitting very good to excellent length. Certainly, great value cabernet, and authentic. Enjoyable now but should cellar easily up to five years." Wine Align
WINEMAKER:
Johan Jordaan
ORIGIN:
Coastal region (Cape Town and Stellenbosch)
TERROIR / SOIL:
Decomposed granite and weathered shale.
VINEYARD AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS:
The vineyards are planted on a range of aspects, from flat to north-eastern facing slopes that moderate phenolic development and enhance fruit preservation. Rich, deep, decomposed granite soils have good water retention and medium fertility, resulting in low, concentrated yields. This adds to the complexity and tannin structure of the wine.
Temperature: winter 8 - 19°C; summer 13 - 29°C
Annual rainfall: average of 450 mm
Proximity to the ocean: 6 to 20 km
WINEMAKING:
Grapes were hand-harvested, de-stemmed and individually sorted before inoculated fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. After 15 days, free run wine was racked to barrels to continue malolactic fermentation in a combination of 80% French and 20% American oak barrels (mainly second fill; some third fill) and matured in the same vessels for 14 months. Barrel selection was done to blend the most harmonious expression of the cool coastal region.
This wine received Control Union Vegan Standard certification by the accredited certifying body Control Union.
