Art is as much a part of Spier as good wine and food. You’ll see it everywhere – from the curated walls in your hotel room to soaring sculptures that seem to grow naturally from the landscape. This winter and over a series of three days, you’ll also have the chance to hear it everywhere thanks to our upcoming The Routes of Sound event.
Now in its second year, The Routes of Sound is an intimate musical experience that invites guests to listen differently. Curated by Brett Bailey and Third World Bunfight, the event sees our most atmospheric spaces transformed into acoustic venues – from the historic Manor House to the Old Wine Cellar and the characterful Soil Room in the Cowshed Shop.
Music As It Should Be
Over three performances, six Cape musicians – Luh’ra, Giuliette Price, Taleswapper, Ntokozo Zwane, Odwa Bongo and Jak Thomas – will perform stripped-back sets in venues designed for true music appreciation. Guests are invited to move in small groups of 30 between three performance spaces, following one of two unique routes, before gathering for a final collective performance curated by celebrated saxophonist Buddy Wells. The concept plays on both routes and roots – the pathways you’ll take, and the return to how music was heard in the pre-electric era: raw and unplugged. The event forms part of our Growing for Good commitment, using the arts to inspire positive social and environmental change.
At its heart, The Routes of Sound celebrates South African artistry and reflects Spier’s ongoing commitment to supporting creative talent through our Growing for Good initiatives. As one of last year’s guests put it:
“The Routes of Sound is a well-organised and affordable show that allowed us to enjoy South Africa’s music at its best. This was really one of the best events I’ve ever attended at Spier and elsewhere.”
